Little Wise is the moniker of Melbourne Folk-Roots and Alt-country singer-songwriter Sophie Klein. Her conversational lyrics and gentle rolling rhythms combine classic storytelling with a contemporary style, making her a darling of Australia’s thriving folk scene. Silver Birch, the debut full-length album from Little Wise, was released in November 2016 and has been heralded as “sweetly emotive and unmistakably thoughtful” (Happy Magazine). The album was featured in the ‘Top 10 Albums Of The Week’ on Melbourne’s community radio stations PBS and RRR, charting in the AMRAP Community Radio Metro Charts, winning ‘Best Debut Release’ in the Rhythms Magazine Writers’ Poll and receiving national airplay on triple j, ABC Radio National and Double J.
Little Wise is proud to present Favourite Song; the third single off Silver Birch. The song was co-written with Melbourne-based, Nashville-bound folk artist John Flanagan. It is a duet about the secret love affair between two people, longing to be dancing together but trapped both on the dance-floor in life in their unhappy marriages. Klein invited acclaimed North-East Victorian artist Sal Kimber (of Sal Kimber and the Rollin’ Wheel) to sing the duet together on the record. Kimber’s vocals are effortless, sultry and blend seamlessly with Klein’s.
Klein reflects: “In my mind this song was set in an era gone by. I felt having Sal sing with me would add a whole new dimension to the song, being a romantic duet between two women. Not only are the characters separated by circumstance of being married to other people, but they are prevented from being together because the relationship itself would be taboo in that time. I liked the idea of presenting the duet in this way because it was closer to my own lived-experience and would be something fresh… I couldn’t think of any other love songs between two people of the same gender!”
But in the music video, directed by filmmaker Agostino Soldati (Liz Stringer, Saint Jude), things are different: people can dance with whomever they choose. Filmed at The Australian Same Sex Dancesport Championships during Melbourne’s annual Midsumma Festival, the music video is an affirming, colourful expression of freedom and love. With the video released on International Women’s Day – 8th March, it is the perfect visual accompaniment to Little Wise’s song.
Sound-wise, the track is a side step away from the more folk-country numbers on Silver Birch. Happy Magazine has described the song as: ‘A brooding and emotionally charged track. Leaning heavily on the slow drumbeat, it touches more on lounge than sleepy small town. There is less of the country strumming and much more of a sultry rock feel in electric guitar and vocals reaching for lower registers.’
Sounds of Oz declared: “‘Favourite Song’, featuring guest vocals from Sal Kimber, has such a great groove that reminded me a little of something Rickie Lee Jones might write.”
Recorded at Woodstock Studios in Balaclava, VIC, Favourite Song was recorded, mixed and produced by production team MEJU (Megan Bernard and Kaliu Tonuma (Neil Finn, Crowded House, Hunters and Collectors). The track showcases Little Wise’s band, in particular Megan Bernard’s tasteful electric guitar and Pam Zaharias’s signature drum grooves.
