Toronto-based heavy music label New Damage Records has unleashed its very first Switcheroo split cover EP; featuring a collaboration between multiple Juno-nominated “local lords of heavy” Cancer Bats and post-hardcore heavyweights Single Mothers. Inspired by the original Dine Alone Records Switcheroo Series feat. Alexisonfire and Moneen, the New Damage Switcheroo Vol.1 sees Cancer Bats mashing up Single Mothers’ “Dog Parks” and “Switchoff”, and Single Mothers covering the Bats’ 2012 banger “Road Sick”. “Ever since the first Switcheroo on Dine Alone Records featuring Alexisonfire and Moneen, we’ve always wanted to bring the series over to New Damage,” comments New Damage label rep Jake Myhal. “The Switcheroo is such a fun concept and we plan on releasing many more. Vol. 2 is already being discussed and it’s quite an ambitious crossover. Look forward to that and others in 2020!”
Cancer Bats lead vocalist Liam Cormier had this to say about covering Single Mothers for the split EP, “When it came to picking Single Mothers songs to cover, we decided why stop at just ONE! We went for it and grabbed 2 and just mashed them into one song! Drew has such awesome lyrics, it was great to really dive into someone elses writing style and cadence and the Romano brothers wrote a scorcher of a punk track that made the whole thing a blast to play!”
Lead vocalist Drew Thomson chimes in on behalf of Single Mothers, “We knew we’d never sound as good as the Bat’s but we picked our favourite song anyways and tried our best not to ruin it while still having fun. Liam has told such a great story that we’re all living through with this song that it felt like, what a perfect one to go out on the road with. SMxCB 4 EVA.”
The release of the New Damage Switcheroo Vol. 1 coincides with a Canadian tour featuring both Cancer Bats and Single Mothers. The 15-date tour, which also includes support from Baltimore hardcore outfit Sharptooth, kicks off tomorrow in Sault Ste Marie and will wrap up in Calgary on September 28th.
