Nappy Talk, the new album from Matt Muse, is out this Friday. Today he’s thrilled to share the album’s next single, “NegroSaiyan”, which was produced by 5Piece and features local Chicago rapper Femdot, via Stereogum. “‘NegroSaiyan’ is my homage to my love for my blackness & an opportunity for me to nerd out on a song,” says Muse. “DragonBall Z was one of my favorite shows growing up, and my current hair reminds me of the super saiyans, but I’m black, so I’m a NegroSaiyan. Femdot is an avid DBZ fan too so he was the perfect feature for this, & it made it the most fun song to create on the project.”
A teaching artist at Young Chicago Authors (the writing and poetry organization which helped propel the likes of Saba, Jamila Woods, Chance The Rapper, Mick Jenkins, Noname, and many others), the Southside Chicago-based rapper is building a hip-hop vision for Black masculine self-love and critical investigation with Nappy Talk. Inspired by Muse’s decision to grow his hair out three years ago, NappyTalk features a collection of songs comprised of energetic, confident raps by the lyricist, producer, and songwriter, both using and subverting typical hip-hop tropes of braggadocio cockiness and machismo to consider male self-image.
For those in the Chicago area, Matt will celebrate Nappy Talk’s release with a special performance at the Taste of Chicago on Fri. July 13th.
