London recording artist, Theo Mak, who records with the moniker, E-MUTE, released his first single of 2014 this week, the first in a series of new singles E-MUTE will drop throughout the year.
The new alternative rock single, titled “Miracle,” is the first song from E-MUTE in nearly a year, and is accompanied by a new musical video that gives fans a chance to watch E-MUTE in HD recording the single in the studio.
“‘Miracle’ was inspired by a difficult, intense time in my life,” Mak said. “I came up with the lyrics, main piano arpeggio and melody in the midst of turmoil, anger and grief. My father was in the hospital terminally ill, and my band, Elixir, with Scott James from the Stereophonics, had just split up. I was discovering a side of myself that I did not previously know about.”
The lyrics from the song that best highlight his feelings, he said, were the following lines: ‘’And I, looking straight up to the sky, facing fears I can’t deny; All I want to see is a clue cause I don’t remember you’’
Already, praise of the single is streaming in. Zavive wrote: “It is thanks to these challenging times that we have this massively dominating track that is the product of Theo’s multi-instrumentation and clever writing style.”
The popular music blog, Indie Rock Cafe, wrote: “E-Mute has returned with a sharp and intelligent new pop-soul sound, and thoughtful lyrics, on the revived band’s new single, ‘Miracle’; we’re looking forward to hearing more from E-Mute’s singles series in coming months.”
The owner of the music blog, Ear Buds In, chimed in with praise as well, writing: “If you like smooth vocals, incredible musicianship, and creative melodies, then you need to check out one of my favorite singer/songwriters from England,” referring to E-Mute’s founder, and the heart and soul of the band, Theo Mak.
E-Mute is a popular indie band that emerged onto the U.K and European music scenes back in 2012 with their edgy, yet sophisticated, sound, and deep lyrics, which were fully realized on the band’s debut EP, Too Proud To Say Loud. As a result, the album was hailed by many music bloggers, fans and music publications, including Music Week and Indie Rock Cafe, which featured the band as a new overseas band to watch, and which resulted in thousands of streams of singles from the EP, like the track, “Flying.”
In the fall of 2013, Mak decided to set out on his own, mostly out of necessity because the other musicians who contributed to the debut EP – all of who were really E-MUTE collaborators and already established, respected and working musicians – had conflicting schedules. Mak chose to keep the E-MUTE band name, and continued writing and recording, with the first new song for the new E-MUTE being “Miracle.”
E-MUTE did get some help though. The producer of E-MUTE’s debut EP, John Robertson, also helped produce and mix “Miracle,” and contributed the guitar and bass parts. Mak recorded the piano parts at The Limehouse studios in London. The single was mastered by Sigurdor Guomundson at Skonrokk Studios.
Mak is a classically trained musician who first began learning how to play the drums and piano at the age of 14 at the Philip Nakas Music College in Athens, Greece, and later earned a masters degree in music performance and composition from Kingston University.
